Hinkley Point C will make a major contribution to the UK’s move to reduce carbon emissions. The electricity generated by its two EPR reactors will offset 9 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions a year, or 600 million tonnes over its 60-year lifespan.
The EPR reactor design has been approved by the UK’s nuclear regulator, the Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR). This means it satisfies Britain’s high and robust standards for nuclear safety.
The UK EPR design being used for Sizewell C is the same as at Hinkley Point C. In July 2022, the Government approved the proposals for Sizewell C and granted the project a Development Consent Order (DCO).

RRPPS is the Radiation Protection Service of University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust and is engaged in all aspects of medical physics and radiation protection. The Service provides guidance, interpretation and training for implementation of regulations and national and international guidance, as well as the full range of medical physics functions including quality assurance of x-ray, radionuclide and MR imaging equipment. It has been recognised as an Approved Dosimetry Service by HSE since the introduction of the Ionising Radiations Regulations in 1985. The Radiation, Chemical and Environmental Hazards Directorate carries out research to advance knowledge about protection from the risks of radiation; provides laboratory and technical services; runs training courses; provides expert information; and fulfils a significant advisory role to regulators, government, the public and others. UKHSA offers a comprehensive range of radiation protection services including RP consultancy (RPA, RWA, LPA, DGSA), dental X-ray protection services, non-ionising radiation (optical and EMF), professional level training, occupational level training, personal dosimetry, radiation metrology (including routine instrument testing), radiochemical analyses, radon assessment, environmental radiological assessments, dose calculations, and radiation emergency preparedness.
