New Honorary Fellowships Awarded

At Wednesday's Annual Dinner in Eastbourne George Hunter and Alex Rankine were awarded Honorary Fellowship.  This is the highest honour that the Society can bestow and is in recognition of their contributions to the Society and to radiation protection.

Dr George Hunter has had a long and distinguished career working in both the UK and for the EU in the field of public and environmental radiation protection.  He was responsible for setting up the Radioactive Substances Policy Unit of the Scottish Environment Protection Agency.  Key achievements during George's time with SEPA are his involvement with the development of the Scottish Government's Higher-Activity Radioactive Waste Policy, the UK Low Level Radioactive Waste Policy, the UK Discharge Strategy, the Radioactive Contaminated Land Regulations for Scotland, creation of the Radioactive Waste Adviser scheme and the Radioactivity in Food and the Environment (RIFE) publication.  George has been a member of SRP for over 30 years; the last 20 years as a Fellow.  During this time he has served as a member of the SRP Scottish Committee including a period as Chair.  In summary, George's influence on protection of the public and the environment throughout his career, not only for himself but for those of us that he has developed and mentored, has been extensive and he is very deserving of this recognition.  Read his full citation here.

Alex Rankine started work at UKAEA Dounreay in 1977 and in 1983 he moved to UKAEA Windscale where he was responsible for the management of all aspects of safety, radiological protection and environmental protection. In 1998 he was appointed Head of Profession (Radiological Protection) for UKAEA, a new concept at the time, so he was the first! He was relocated to Dounreay where he liaised with NII and SEPA and took the lead on the “Dounreay Particles” issue.  After taking early retirement from UKAEA in 2007, Alex joined Enviros Ltd for a few years working for clients in the UK and Europe.  He then returned to UKAEA as Head of Radiological Protection at Chapelcross, before joining Eden Nuclear and Environment Ltd in 2014.  Alex has been a member of SRP for over 40 years; the last 25 years as a fellow.  In summary, Alex Rankine is a recognised expert in the areas of radiation and environmental protection, safety management and radioactive waste management.
