A Special Council Meeting
News Story from 10th Jul 2025

Last Thursday SRP Council met in London. It was the first meeting of the new SRP Council year – so special for that reason of course – but it also marked a very significant date for the radiation protection community. Exactly 100 years ago the First International Congress of Radiology was held at Central Hall Westminster on 1-4 July 1925. Council met at the same venue in the same week and were given a tour by a member of the Central Hall archivist team. Nearly 500 delegates from 21 countries attended the 1925 Congress, an amazing achievement given the complex travel plans involved. It was during this Congress that ‘An international committee for the study of standardization of dosage was appointed’ and from this, at the second Congress in Stockholm in 1928, ICRU and ICRP were formed. The 6th International Congress in 1950 was also held in London and at the same venue and the photos above show the Opening Ceremony with Council being photographed on the same platform.
